This is a full-time position in a laboratory that utilizes Drosophila (the fruit fly) as a model organism for conducting research projects on gene regulation through chromatin structure (epigenetics). Current projects include repeat-induced heterochromatin formation, and expression mechanisms for genes embedded in heterochromatin. Primary duties and responsibilities will include:
- Assisting with research studies, experiments and assays, including collection of data and maintaining laboratory notebook. One focus will be on Drosophila genetics, including a large genetic screen. Parallel and follow-up investigations will utilize a variety of molecular and biochemical assays.
- Coordinating laboratory ordering and preparation of reagents.
- Maintaining compliance with established safety procedures including required documentation in the laboratory.
- Ensuring lab conditions and equipment are properly maintained in accordance with established procedures.
- Assisting with general lab maintenance and cleaning.
Some experience with Drosophila husbandry would be a plus, but is not required. Experience with techniques for DNA manipulation and analysis (cloning, PCR, etc.) is required. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively in a team environment. Candidates willing to commit to two years on the project can anticipate the opportunity to take the lead on a sub-project.
Salary for this position will be determined based on experience. The position is suitable for a recent BA graduate or a person with equivalent experience.
